Thailand, the country, whose main attractions are wonderful beaches, spas with high-end facilities and exotic Thai food is officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand.

This country is the world’s 20th largest in terms of GDP at PPPP (Purchasing Power Parity) and its economy is growing rapidly due to many reforms taken in various fields.

The people of Thailand are strongly connected to their roots and have larger than life attitude which makes this country even more beautiful place to live. This country is one of the destinations which remain on everyone’s wish list.

The government of Thailand has well-formulated policies and rules for immigrationas well as for individuals who want to visit the country for exploring its beauty and adventures.

Thailand Visa Exemption

Foreigners who fall under the following two categories can come to Thailand without any kind of visa.

1) Those who are nationals of the countries mentioned in the pre-defined list of visa exempted countries.Such individuals can travel the country as tourists and can stay for up to 30 days.

2) Those who are nationals of the countries having bilateral agreements with Thailand for exemption of visa.

All other foreign nationals are required to obtain a valid visa.

Thailand Visa Types

There are different visa types and sub-types issued by the Thailand embassy and consulate offices depending on the purpose and duration of stay.

These can be mentioned as below:

1. Visa on Arrival: There is a pre-defined list of countries the nationals of which apply for this visa after entering into Thailand. Visa holders can stay in the country for up to 15 days.

2. Transit Visa (TS): This visa is suitable for individuals who –

This visa remains valid for 3 months and allows you to stay for up to 30 days in Thailand.

3. Tourist Visa (TR):This visa is suitable for individuals whowant to enter into the country for tourism.

This visa allows you to stay here for up to 60 days and remains valid for either 3 or 6 months.

4. Non-Immigrant Visa: There are various sub-types under this visa class. Individuals with following objectives can apply for the suitable categories mentioned as below:

Other than the above list, following visa types are issued depending upon the purpose and duration of stay as well as individual circumstances.

These visas can be single entry or multiple-entry and allow you to stay for up to 90 days in the country. Single entry visa remains valid for 3 months while multiple-entry visa can be valid for even up to 1 year.

5. Diplomatic/Official Visa: This visa is issued to individuals who have to perform duties at a foreign Diplomatic Mission or Consulate or International Organization situated in Thailand. This is also granted to their family members. Visa holders must possess diplomatic or official passports.

6. Courtesy Visa:This visa is issued with the discretion of the embassy and consulate offices to the individuals for performing official duties or fulfilling other objectives. The passport held by such people can be diplomatic, official or ordinary.

The lasttwo types of visa are issued upon official request.

How to applyThailand Visa?

You have to submit visa application form and supporting documents with the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in your country of residence or through other appropriate channels.

However, nationals of some countries have to apply only through the first way and hence it is necessary to check the same with the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in your country of residence.

Also, some Embassies and Consulates-General accept applications which are made personally while others may accept these sent through your representatives, authorised travel agencies or by post.


The following documents are essential for visa application

Along with the above primary documents, certain additional documents are also required,which differ for each type of visa. You caninquire about them with the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in your country of residence.

Extension of stay

You need to submit an application with the Office of Immigration Bureau located in Bangkok; however, granting of the extended stay period depends on the immigration officers.

Holders of non-immigrant visa can get their visa extended for 1 year from the date of first entry into the country if applicable regulations favour their specific conditions.

Change of visa status

You need to submit an application with the Office of Immigration Bureau located in Bangkok.

Work Permit

Even if you have a visa for conducting economic activities in the country, you cannot engage into any of them unless you obtain a work permit. You or your representatives living in Thailand can apply for a work permit.

There is a list of eligibility criteria for Non-Immigrant Visa and those who fulfil any of them can apply to the One Stop Service Centre for obtaining visa, work permit, visa extension and re-entry.
