Switzerland does not need any introduction as we are all aware that it is a paradise on this earth. It is one of the favorite vacation spots in the world. But along with it, the country is also known for its economic development and quality of life.

Majority of population in Switzerland live on the plateau and two of its cities – Geneva and Zurich are the global cities and economic centres. It is one of the most developed countries of the world and hence its inhabitants lead a lavish lifestyle.

Switzerland is a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and despite of not being a member of the European Union (EU), the country has maintained smooth relations with the countries of the union. And this is the reason that it is part of the Schengen Area.

Countries in this area have the agreement of free movement of persons and hence inhabitants and tourists staying in Switzerland can travel in other member countries of the Schengen without any restrictions.

Nationals of EU and certain other countries mentioned in the pre-defined list are exempt from the requirement of obtaining a visa if they want to stay only for up to 90 days. All other foreign nationals need to have a valid visa to enter into the Switzerland, irrespective of the duration of their stay.

Switzerland Visa types

There are different types of visas which can mainly be classified as below:

1. Airport Transit Visa: If you have landed at the international zone of airport in Switzerland, you may have to possess an airport transit visa depending on your nationality as some countries come under the exception list for the purpose.

If your country of residence is not under the list and you need to wait at the airport in order to board another flight to reach the destination which is outside Schengen area, you need to have a visa.

2. Short-Stay Visa:Also known as Schengen visa, it is suitable for the applicants who want to visit the country for the purposes such as –

Visa holders can stay in Switzerland for up to 90 days in any 180-day period till the visa expires. They can also visit other member countries of the Schengen area.

3. Long-Stay Visa: Also known as National Visa, it is suitable for the applicants who want to stay in the country for longer than 90 days for the purpose of –

Visa holders can visit and travel in the other member countries of the Schengen area for a period of 90 days in any 180-day period.

How to apply Switzerland Visa?

1. Short-stay visa:For short-stay visa, you can either apply via online mode or send it to the Swiss embassy or consulate in the country of your residence. It differs from case to case.

2. Long-stay visa: You can apply through the Swiss embassy or consulate present in the country of your residence.

Documents

You need to submit the required form and documents while filing an application.

Along with the basic documents stated above, some additional documents are also required depending on the specific type of visa you haveapplied for.

Visa Approval

You may to have to visit the Swiss diplomatic or consulate in person for an interview on being called upon after your visa application gets into reviewing and screening stage.

Extension of Visa

IfIn case of short-stay visa, you can apply for extension of visa if the circumstances are unavoidable and you need to stay in the country.

Work Permit

If you are planning to stay in Switzerland for conducting any kind of economic activity, you must obtain a work permit from the authorities of this country. This applies even to the individuals who have a short-stay visa.

Residence Permit

Every foreign national staying in Switzerland needs to have a residence permit in order to stay for more than 3 months.

Your family members and dependants can accompany you in case of long-stay visa, subject to the conditions in specific visa type you have applied for.

While entering in the country, you need to show the documentary evidences for reason and duration of stay, means of support during your stay, travel itinerary and accommodation arrangements.
