Consisting of peninsula, islandand archipelago regions, the Kingdom of Norway has an extensive coastline and an awesome climate.

Along with having world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, this country also has the 4th highest per capita income.On the basis of per-capita, Norway is the world’s largest producer of oil and natural gas outside the Middle East.

It is considered as one of the most developed democracies in the world. Norway is a founding member of the United Nations (UN) and a member of the Schengen Area.

Due to the smooth international relations of this country with the entire world and the high quality of life, it is the place where immigrants from around the world come to settle and live a prosperous life. Therefore, immigration trend has risen drastically in the recent few years.

Norway Visa Exemptions

1. Nationals of European Union (EU), EEA and Switzerlandcan enter into Norway without a visa.

2. Citizens, residence permit holdersand tourists of other member countries of the Schengen area can also come to Norway without a visa and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

3. Diplomatic or official passport holders are also exempted from visa requirements in certain cases.

4. Also, nationals of some other countries are exempted from obtaining a visa for visiting Norway.

Norway Visa Requirements

Foreign nationals other than the above cases are required to have a visa in order to enter into the country.

Visa Types

There are different visa types and sub-types for Norway depending on the purpose and duration of your stay.

The main visa types are explained below:

1. Airport transit Visa:In order to transit through Norway, you need to avail an airport transit visa. But you can stay only at the International zone of the Norwegian airport and cannot enter the country.

2. Short-term Visa:Also known as “Visitor Visa” or “Schengen type C”Visa, it is suitable for individuals who want to travel to the country for the purposes of –

This visa allows you to stay for maximum 90 days in a period of 180 days.With this visa, you can also stay in other member countries of the Schengen area for up to 90 days in a period of 180 days.

But you must not work or conduct any business activities while residing in any of the country in this area.

Generally, this visa is meant for single entry only but in special cases, you can request for multiple entry facility by selecting this option in your visa application form and explain properly the reason behind the request. In exceptional circumstances,a multiple entry visa with a validity of 5 years is also given.

3. Visitor Visa for Norway only: If you are considered as inappropriate for granting visitor visa for the entire Schengen area, you can apply for a visa that allows you to enter and stay in Norway only. But it is given only on humanitarian grounds in unavoidable circumstances.

4. Visa with Limited Territorial Validity (VLTV):With this visa, you can travel only in selected member countries of the Schengen area.

5. Visa with sailing permit: It is suitable for individuals who want to visit the country for boat sailing. It is granted during the months of May and September.

6. Emergency Visa: Under extreme situations, where you need to visit the Norway immediately and cannot wait to apply for a visa, you may be granted an emergency visa. But for that, you must approach the Norwegian police at the country’s border to apply for a visa explaining your reasons to do so.

The validity period of the visa is mentioned on the visa sticker.

How to applyNorway Visa?

You can submit the visa application at the Norwegian Embassy in your country of residence. If the embassy is not present in your country, you can apply at the embassy or consulate-general of another member country of the Schengen area, provided they are authorised to carry out this task for Norway.

If you are applying through Norwegian Embassy, you have to first enter into Norway, Sweden or Iceland.

You must apply 3 months prior to the projected date of entry into the Norway or another country of the Schengen area in caseyou want to first visit that country in this area.


Other than the above documents, additional documents also need to be submitted depending on the specific type of visa you have applied for.

Your documents must be either in English or Norwegian and if they are in any other language you must translate them to any one of these languages.

Residence Permit

In order to live in Norway for longer than 90 days, you must obtain a residence permit. Generally, individuals moving to this country for the following purposes would require a residence permit.

As per the rules, the term residence permit includes work permit as well and hence in order to work in Norway you do not need to apply for a work permitseparately. However, there are exceptions in the case of certain people and jobs.

If you want to stay in the country for less than 90 days but have to engage in some kind of employment, you must obtain aresidence permit.

You should apply for the residence permit before entering into the country and you need to submit your original passport along with your application.

Permanent Residence Permit

If you want to live and work in Norway indefinitely, you need to apply for a permanent residence permit.

You can submit your application along with the required documents at the dedicated office in your area. In the absence of the same, you can apply at the local police station.

You must apply for this at least 1 month before the expiration of your temporary residence permit as the process requires time to get completed.

Extension of stay

You cannot extend the visitor visa.
