Known in the world for its rubber production, Malaysia is the country whose ancient history and age-old traditions still have a strong presence in various aspects of life of the people living here.

It is the founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and has always tried to maintain cordial relations with other countries.

Being the 3rd largest economy in the Southeast Asia, this country has demonstrated a constantly increasing graph of development and progress on many forefronts.

Due to the abundance of natural resources and highly efficient human capital, Malaysia has plenty of opportunities for everyone and hence it is one of the desirable places for immigration.

In orderto travel to Malaysia, foreign nationals are required to have a valid visa.

Malaysia Visa Types

There are different types of visas granted to aspirants depending on their nationality, purpose and duration of stay.

They can be classified as below:

1. Transit Visa:Individuals landing on the international zone of the Malaysian airport in transit need to obtain this visa. But the exception here is those people who do not need to leave the airport premises and would continue their journey with the same flight; such individuals do not need to obtain a visa.

2. Visa on Arrival:This visa is availed after entering into Malaysia and is given only to the nationals of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and India. It is given for tourism and remains valid only for 14 days. The stay period is non-extendable.


a) Individuals must be coming to Malaysia either from Thailand or Singapore.

3. Single entry Visa:Having the validity of 3 months:This visa is suitable for individuals who want to arrive in this country for the purposes of –

It remains valid for a period of 3 months to 1 year from the date of issue. But you can stay for a maximum of 30 days during each visit. The visa cannot be extended.

Nationals of India and the People’s Republic of China can apply for this visa for a social visit.


a) Applicants must have a confirmed return air ticket and a sufficient amount of funds to support them in Malaysia.

Visa types can also be classified as below on the basis of reference.

1. Visa with reference:Individuals who are travelling to Malaysia for the purposes of study, employment, profession, meeting their relatives or staying as dependants of Malaysia residents require a reference from the Malaysian Immigration Department. You can apply for a visa only after receiving the approval letter from them.

2. Visa without reference:Individuals who are travelling as tourists or for attending a seminar or conference do not require any reference for obtaining a visa.

How to applyMalaysia Visa?

You can submit a visa application to the Malaysian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Citizens of India and People’s Republic of China (PRC) can also apply online.


Along with the above documents, additional documents are also required depending on the specific type of visa you have applied for.


While entering into the country, foreign nationals are given an entry pass suitable for their purpose of visit.

Types of passes

Different types of passes can be mentioned as below:

1. Short term pass/Social visit: It is intended for people who come as tourists or for attending seminars, conferences, competitions or any other event.

2. Long term pass/ Social visit:It is intended for people who are –

Depending on the individual circumstances, it can be segregated into spouse permit and dependant pass.It serves as a temporary residence permit for at least 6 months.

3. Student pass:It is intended for foreign nationals coming into the country for studying. The universities send a letter of offer to the foreign students after receiving the request for the same. And on the basis of this letter of offer, this pass is issued. If the academic performance is considered as low, this pass is not renewed.

Work Permit

It is necessary to obtain a work permit in order to conduct any kind of economic activity in the country. Following types of work permits are granted in Malaysia.

1. Visit Pass: Also known as temporary employment pass, it is for unskilled and semi-skilled workers in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing, construction and service. It is intended for people who want to take employment for not more than 2 years in Malaysia or have monthly salary less than RM 5000.

2. Employment Pass:Having the validity of minimum 2 years, it is given to foreigners who possess specialized skills and work at managerial or technical positions.

3. Professional Visit Pass: It is given to foreigners who come to work with a company in Malaysia for short-term. It is usually for technical experts and remains valid for 6 to 12 months.

Permanent Residence

If you have lived in Malaysia for continuous 5 years, you can apply for permanent residence. And those foreigners who have married to Malaysian citizens can apply after living in the country continuously for 10 years.
