The country has a rich history, fantastic historical structures, diverse climate and a unique culture. Arts, literature, science & technology, music & cinema, sports and fashion – all areas are highly developed in Italy.

The country has the eighth largest economy in the world and hence is the attractive place for employees, professionals and businessmen across the world.The excellent quality of education, healthcare and infrastructure are the favouring factors for this phenomenon.

Italy is the founding member of the G7, G8, Eurozone and the OECD. It is also a part of the Schengen area. Hence, citizens, residents and tourists staying in Italy can visit and travel in other countries of the area without visa or special permission for up to 3 months.

The nationals of the EU, Schengen member territories and certain other countries are exempted from the mandate of acquiring a visa to visit the Italy for up to 90 days. All other foreign nationals have to obtain a valid visa, irrespective of the duration of stay.

Types of Italy Visa

There are three main types of visa, which are described as below:

1. Uniform Schengen Visa (VSU):This type "C" visa can be sub-classified into transit visaand brief-sojourn or travel visa. The following sub-types apply in different cases:

Transit visa is issued for entry into international zone of an airport in Italy to the people who have landed here and have to wait for the next flight to embark for the destination country which is outside the Schengen area.

Brief-sojourn i.e. brief-travel travel visa is for the individuals who,

This visa allows the individuals to stay in the country for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.They can also visit and travel in other member countries of the Schengen area.The validity period for this visa is for 1 (C1), 2 (C2), 3 (C3) or 5 (C5) years. This visa can be with single-entry or multiple-entry travel conditions depending on the specific visa type and circumstances.

2. National Visa (NV): Also known as Long sojourn visa, it allows the individuals to stay in the country for more than 90 days.

The visa holders can also travel to and stay in other member countries of the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. But, once they enter in to any other member territory of this area, they need to declare their presence to the police within 3 working days.

3. Limited Territorial Validity Visa (LTV): This type of visa is issued in special cases as per the discretion of the diplomatic or consular representative.

Visa holders can stay in the Italy and travel to those member countries of the Schengen area which are specifically mentioned in the visa approval documents. Thus, unlike other visa types, you cannot move freely to all the member territories of the Schengen area.

Combining all the sub-types, the total number of visas issued by Italian government is 21.

How to applyItaly Visa?

Applicants need to submit the visa application form in writing along with all the required documents at the Italian diplomatic or consular office situated in their country of residence.

Visa Approval

The representatives in the consular office verify the documents and interview the applicants to decide whether to grant a visa or not. If their report is positive, the necessary checks are conducted and you are issued a visa you applied for.

And the National Visa is issued within 90 days of the receipt of application. However, it can take longer depending on the circumstances

Visa Rejection

If your visa application gets rejected, you can lodge a claim with the TribunaleAmministrativoRegionale (T.A.R.) i.e. regional administrativecourt of Lazio within 60 days of receiving denial notification.

If your visa application for accompanying family members gets rejected, you can submit eventual claims to the authorised regular court.

Declaration of presence

Those who have availed brief-sojourn visa need to file a declaration of presence at the police headquarters of the province in which they are staying within 8 days of their arrival in the country.

Nationals of certain countries are exempted from this requirement and this is specified by affixing the USV sticker on the passport or other travel document held by them.

Residence Permit

Immigrants staying in Italy with the National Visa are required to apply for a residence permit by submitting a duly filled form and other documents with the Italian immigration authorities. This has to be done within 8 days of arriving in Italy.


Your family members and dependants can accompany you in case of long-stay visa, subject to the conditions in specific visa type you have applied for.

On arriving in Italy

While entering in the country, you need to show the documentary evidences for reason and duration of stay, means of support during your stay, travel itinerary and accommodation arrangements.
