Hong Kong Visa

Ranking as the world’s 4th most densely populated sovereign territory, Hong Kong is one of the wonders created by China.

This special administrative region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR) has its own political, economic and judicial system. It is one of the world’s most significant financial centres and its currency – the Hong Kong dollar is the world’s 8th largest trading entity.

Hong Kong has well-developed shipping industry, health care sector, education, public transportation and infrastructure. Due to the facilities available in the territory, people have a high standard of life and life expectancy.

It is the place where people from every corner of the world want to come for witnessing its magnificent skyscrapers, enjoying its night life, savoring its wonderful cuisine and building some incredible memories. Many people dream to work and settle in Hong Kong.

This territory has the separate immigration policy from the rest of China.

Right of Abode

It is the right to enter and stay in Hong Kong without any visa and conditions. This kind of right is given to individuals who fulfill certain eligibility criteria.

Hong Kong Visa Exemptions

1. There is a pre-defined list of 145 countries and territories, the nationals of which can enter into Hong Kong without a visa. The period of their stay depends on their nationality as some can stay for up to 7 days while some can even stay for up to 180 days.

But the individuals falling under this category must hold national passports as holders of certain types of passports are not considered for this purpose.

In case of certain countries, there are some exceptions to this visa-free facility.

2. Chinese nationals having the right of abode in Macao can stay in Hong Kong for up to 180 days without a visa by presenting the Macao permanent identity card.

Individuals travelling to Hong Kong through this way can and cannot carry out the following activities while being in Hong Kong:

3. Also, official and diplomatic passport holders issued by some countries can enter the Hong Kong without a visa and stay for up to 14 days.

APEC Business Travel Card

There are some countries, the individuals of which can enter into Hong Kong without a visa for conducting business trips for up to 60 days, if they have an APEC Business Travel Card, which contains the "HKG" code on its backside.

Hong Kong Visa Requirements

1. All foreign nationals whose home country is not included in the aforementioned list need to obtain a visa in order to visit Hong Kong.

The countries for this purpose can be categorized as follows:

1) Including Transit Visa: Nationals of these countries have to obtain a visa for entering the territory as well as for transitingairside through it. Even if they remain within the airport transit area, they need to have a transit visa.

2) Excluding Transit Visa: Nationals of these countries have to obtain a visa for entering the territory. But if they want to transit airside through it, they do not need a visa if they are going to remain within the airport transit area.

Special Case – Pakistan: Though Pakistan comes under the category wherein even transit visa is required,there is 1 exception. Nationals of Pakistan who hold ordinary passport and want to transit airside through Hong Kong need not apply for a transit visa if they fulfill the following conditions:

a) Remainwithin the airport transit area

b) Their next flight is within 12 hours of landing in this territory

c) Either of the following

i.) They hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK, the USA or a Schengen Area member country

ii.) They have a single-entry visa issued by the above countries, after using which they are arriving directly from these countries.

2. There are special rules for the nationals of mainland China and Macau if they want to enter into Hong Kong. Permit for a visa and stay period are granted according to these rules and on the fulfilment of required eligibility criteria and conditions.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered as eligible for any kind of visa, you must fulfill the following conditions:

a) Your bona fides are not in doubt i.e. your record in terms of character is good.

b) You have enough funds to sustain in Hong Kong.

This is just the basic criteria as other requirements have also to be met depending on the specific visa type you have applied for.

Following is one example:

For transit and tourist visa: You have an onward ticket for your next destination (This is not required if your next destination is Mainland of China or Macao).

Different kinds of visas are granted by the Hong Kong Immigration Department depending on your purpose and duration of stay. Some visa types can also have sub-types.

6) Working Holiday Scheme (WHS)

7) Supplementary Labour Scheme (SLS)

How to applyHong Kong Visa?

You can apply for a Hong Kong visa in any of the following three ways:

1) By submitting the visa application at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country of residence.

2) By sending the visa application to the HKSAR immigration department through the post.

3) By having a local sponsor from Hong Kong to submit the visa application at the HKSAR immigration department.

Visa Approval

It takes around 4 weeks for visa processing to complete.

Documents

1) A passport having an at least specific period of validity ranging from 1 to 6 months after the end of thestay period in Hong Kong (This required stay period depends on the nationality of the traveller)

2) Passport size photos

3) Proof of financial sufficiency which shows that you have adequate funds to support yourself while living in Hong Kong and buying a return ticket (If you already haven’t bought one) (Especially in case of tourist visa)

4) Medical certificate

5) Police clearance certificate

Additional documents are also required depending on your purpose of applying for a visa. Some of them can be shown as below:

1) Educational certificates

2) Course Enrollment letter

3) Invitation from the company or organizer of seminar, conference, trade show, exhibition etc

4) Accommodation proof

5) Marriage certificate

6) Relationship proof

Extension of Stay

You can apply for visa extension only if a special need arises or circumstances require you to do so. However, you should do this at least certain number of days before the completion of your stay period. (The number of days varies according to visa types)
