Belgium Visa

Officially known as the “Kingdom of Belgium”, this country comprises of a population from different backgrounds and races.

Having the dark history of war and invasions, Belgium has emerged to be a peaceful nation and a powerful economy.

It is a founding member of the Eurozone, NATO, OECD and WTO and is the home to the headquarters of the European Union (EU) and NATO.

The country has made tremendousprogress in terms of education, public health care, national income, infrastructure, sports, science and technology.

As Belgium is a part of the Schengen Area, the citizens, residents and tourists of Belgium can enter into other member countries of the area and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Belgium Visa Exemptions

1.) Citizens of EU, EEA and Switzerland can enter into Belgium and also engage in any kind of economic activity without a visa, work permit or any special permit. However, in certain cases, they are required to register at the local town hall after arriving in this country.

2.) Citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway can enter visa-free into Belgium.

3.) Nationals of certain other countries are also not required to obtain a visa for coming to Belgium.

Belgium Visa Requirements

All foreign nationals who do not fall under any of the above categories need to avail a visa in order to enter Belgium.

Visa Types

There are several types and sub-types of visas issued by the government of Belgium depending on your nationality, purpose and duration of stay.

1. Transit Visa: There are certain countries, the nationals of which do not require a visa for transiting through Belgium.

But for those who require a visa, it is essential to have one before arriving in the country.This visa allows you to transit airside through Belgium.Butyou must comply with the following requirements:

2. Short-Stay Visa:Also known as “Short-Stay Schengen Visa” or “Type C Visa”, it allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. With this visa, you can also travel to other member countries of the Schengen Area. But the total stay period should not exceed 90 days.

This visa is suitable for the purposes of –

In order to live in Belgium for more than 90 days, you must have a residence permit along with the long-stay visa.

How to applyBelgium Visa?
1. Visa

You can apply at the Belgian embassy located in your country of residence by submitting the required form and documents. Your visa application form must be completed in either of these languages – French, Dutch, German or English.

If you are already staying in Belgium either due to visa exemption facility, for stay up to 90 days or having a residence card which was granted for another purpose, you can apply for the long-stay visa and residence permit at the local Belgian municipal administration office.

You should apply for a visa not earlier than 3 months from the projected date of travel in case of transit and short-stay visa.

2. Residence Permit

While applying for a long-stay visa, you have to apply for a residence permit as well.

Work Permit

order to work in Belgium, you need to first search for a relevant job and if found one, your employer carries out the procedure of obtaining a work permit for you from the Belgian authorities.

There are three types of work permits, which are described as below:

1) Type A: It allows you to work for any employer indefinitely

2) Type B: It allows you to work for a specific employer for up to 1 year and it is renewable

3) Type C: It allows you to work for any employer for up to 1 year and it is renewable. This is meant for those individuals who stay in Belgium on a temporary basis such as students.

Somehighly qualified and skilled individuals can apply for a European Blue Card to enter the country in order to work.

Even if you have arrived in this country with short-stay visa, you need to have a work permit if you have arrived for the paid work including training or an internship.

Registration

1. Short term visit:If you come to Belgium through short-stay visa, you must register at the local municipal administration office within 3 days of your arrival. And they would notify you in writing about the date on which you should leave from this country.

2. Long term stay:If you come to Belgium with the intention of staying for longer than 900 days, you must register at the local municipal administration office within 8 working days of your arrival to obtain your residence card. You would be given the Certificate of Registration and a residence card.

There are two types of residence card, which are mentioned as below:

1) A residence card: For those who want to stay only for a specific time period.

2) B residence card: For those who want to stay here indefinitely.

Permanent Residence

If you live in Belgium continuously for 5 years, you can apply for permanent residence in this country. For granting this to you, certain other conditions are also to be met.

If you have a Blue Card issued from another member country of the EUand had lived in that country, the time spent over there is also considered for calculation of 5 years.
